What is Precision Oncology?

New Approaches to Treating Cancer

We are getting closer to a future where cancer can be cured. Over the past 20 years, we've learned a lot more about cancer. We now know that not all cancers are the same. For example, breast cancer and colorectal cancer are different from each other, and even patients with the same type of cancer can have differences. This has led to the idea that cancer treatment should be personalized to each patient.

What is Precision Oncology?

Precision oncology is a new way of treating cancer that uses detailed information about a patient's tumor to decide the best treatment. Doctors look at the specific traits of the cancer to pick a treatment that will work best for that patient. The goal is to improve results for all cancer patients and help reduce the suffering caused by cancer.

Cancer Biomarker Patient Guide

The Cancer Biomarker Patient Guide was created by the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) to help patients and their families understand more about cancer biomarker testing. Biomarker testing helps doctors decide which personalized treatments might work best for a patient’s cancer.

What’s in the Guide?

The guide explains the basics of biomarker testing and gives patients, caregivers, and families the information they need before going to medical appointments. It also includes a glossary to help patients understand common terms and suggests questions to ask healthcare teams before and after testing.
