Utilizing Intraoperative Incisional (CLEAN) Wound Irrigation: A Randomized Controlled Trial

FAQs

  • We are evaluating which of three intraoperational wound irrigation (i.e. cleaning) methods best reduces incisional site infections within 30 days of surgery.

  • Right now, all three irrigation methods are commonly used by surgeons; which method is utilized is currently up to surgeon preference.

The results of this research will give healthcare professionals important information about which irrigation method best reduces the risk of surgical site infections.

  • We are conducting a clinical trial comparing three wound irrigation (i.e. washing) methods:

    a) Washing with Povidone-iodine solution

    b) Washing with Saline

    c) No washing

The primary outcome is the occurrence of an incisional surgical site infection (i.e. wound infection) within 30 days of surgery.

Patients will be contacted 30 days after surgery to complete a survey. Additional outcomes of interest include: emergency room and physician visits, hospital admissions, quality of life.

  • The results of this clinical trial will be used to change practice.
